Stephanie grew up on the Kāpiti Coast and started piano lessons at age 8. While at Wellington High School, she had her first taste of musical glory, winning 'Best Song' for one of her first songs at the local Rockquest heats with her all-girl band. Later she gained a BA in Philosophy and Religious Studies at Victoria University. While at university, she took several music papers including gamelan music, which led to her joining Gamelan Padhang Moncar (Javanese percussion ensemble).
Post-university, Stephanie immersed herself in the Wellington music scene and wrote original music with a number of bands including psych-folk acts Toucan Stubbs and Swamp Doctor. She also created music for theatre shows including collaborations with Binge Culture Collective and Playshop. Stephanie landed her first piano teaching gig in 2014, taking over a roll of 20-30 students at Thorndon Primary School. Inspired by traditional shadow puppet shows with the gamelan, she started to explore shadow puppetry and created The Shadow Chateau with Anna Bailey (String Bean Puppets).
After a life-changing six month cycle tour through Mexico in 2016, Stephanie started her current band Birdfeeder with her partner in art and life, Josh Harris, and original high school bandmate Marley Mokomoko-Young. Birdfeeder represents a flowering of Stephanie's songwriting talents, and a honing of her artistic voice, supported by these close collaborators. Her exploration of different musical forms continues, recently playing fiddle and singing harmonies in the Appalachian old-time band Cotton Daisy Backstep.
Stephanie also continues to explore and refine her skills in puppetry. In 2017 she travelled to Spare Parts puppet theatre in Perth for a two week puppetry intensive, and in 2018 she created the giant puppet show 'Fishy Fishy' (NZ Fringe Festival 2018). Stephanie has also worked with REACT (Rangiwahia Environmental Arts Centre Trust) and their giant puppets. Most recently, Stephanie was able to combine her interests in music and puppets in the Birdfeeder show 'The Veiled Isle'.
